Mexican Telecommunication Law Advances Government’s Surveillance Power

Mexican government has passed a law in the parliament which will increase the power of the Mexican intelligence. The government has passed a new law regarding the technology in telecommunication companies which would bind them to give more information about their customers if government needs it. This move was taken because they need to break the telecom monopolies. Experts say that it will be used to make secret agencies surveillance more powerful. The activist in Mexico City have protested it on the streets by marching to headquarters of Televisa which the biggest broadcaster to the senate. The US government has forced to shut their surveillance program because almost the whole world knows about the spying programs that they conduct in behalf of national security but in records there is no threat but they are filled with the people personal information like credit card number, name and all.

Mexican digital rights activist LuisFernando Garcia said “Well, in our view, the censorship that it allows on the internet. Also, it puts responsibility on – third party liability as it is known – in which companies are made to make decisions on legality of the content that is generated by the users and usually, they abuse this power and they censor things that they shouldn’t. Also, we are worried about net neutrality provisions which would basically make the internet like TV; you would have to pay for special services like streaming or video games.”

If we talk about the mass surveillance, almost all the agencies spying on people but not all of them has Edward Snowden companies like Microsoft, Google were compromised by their effort and now Mexican government added a new chapter in the history of observation and almost all the companies now forced to give more information about their customers.
